The Fear vs. The Reality
Few phrases in the English language cause as much unnecessary anxiety as "root canal." However, for our neighbors near the Maitland Art Center, this procedure is actually the hero of the story. It is the only way to stop a severe infection while keeping your natural tooth in place.
The Clinical Science: Inside the Pulp Chamber
A tooth is composed of enamel, dentin, and the Pulp. When a cavity or crack allows bacteria into the pulp, an abscess forms. Because the tooth cannot expand, the pressure builds, causing the characteristic "throbbing" pain.
Precision Debridement
At Pacha & Bijan Dental, we use Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) Rotary Files. Traditional steel files were stiff, but NiTi is flexible, allowing us to follow the natural curves of your root canals with microscopic precision. This ensures that every trace of infected tissue is removed without weakening the tooth structure.
The Patient Journey: A Stress-Free Experience
- Diagnosis: We use digital imaging to map the root anatomy.
- Anesthesia: We use localized numbing techniques that ensure you are completely comfortable. Many patients even fall asleep during the procedure!
- Cleaning & Shaping: The canal is disinfected with antimicrobial agents.
- Sealing: We fill the canal with Gutta-Percha, a natural latex material that expands to create a hermetic seal against future bacteria.
Frequently Asked Questions: Root Canals
- Can't I just pull the tooth? You can, but a bridge or implant is much more expensive and invasive than saving your natural tooth with a root canal.
- How do I know I need one? Common signs include lingering sensitivity to heat, pain when chewing, or a "pimple" on the gums (an abscess).
- Do I need a crown afterward? Yes. Since the tooth no longer has a blood supply, it can become brittle. A crown protects it from fracturing.
- Will the tooth be "dead"? The tooth will no longer feel hot or cold, but it is still anchored in living bone and functions perfectly.
Save your tooth and end the pain.
